With football season in full swing, Michigan’s O-K athletic conference has banned fans from chanting “U-S-A” during games. Officials say that students use the chant to imply something derogatory to the other team. Any student using the chant at any time, besides after the national anthem, faces school discipline.

Maybe these students should start chanting “First Amendment” instead. Any such discipline for speech at an obviously public and even taxpayer-funded event, like a school football game, would likely face constitutional challenges. Any school attempting to discipline a student for chanting “U-S-A” at a football game will face prolonged court proceedings; proceedings in which the aggrieved student will likely ultimately prevail.

This attorney suggests that these students simply start chanting “U-S-B” instead. Who doesn’t like a good tribute to power cords?
